Josph W. Herman, 95, of Millville, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at Bridgeton Hospice Center after a brief illness.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he grew up in Salem and moved to Millville in 1946. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He participated in the campaigns of China, Central Burma and India Burma. He was awarded a Distinguished Unit Badge in 1944. Mr. Herman worked for Amoco Oil Co. as a tank truck driver for 30 years and retired when Amoco merged with British Petroleum. He had been a member of the Teamsters Union. He then worked for Snell Electric Co. of Vineland as a warehouse manager until he retired a second time. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Millville and B.P.O. Elks of Millville Lodge 580. His former memberships included: American Legion Nabb-Leslie Post 82, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 1836 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Bush-Kerrick Post 2169, all of millville. Mr. Herman enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening and taking winter trips to Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.

He is survived by one daughter, Fay Compotaro and husband Dominick of Norman; three grandchildren, Nicholas Compotaro and wife Barbara, Antoinette Curley and husband Timothy, and Patricia Downey, all of Vineland; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Irene "Doris" (Smith); one brother, William Gnewuch; and one granddaughter, Barbara Ann Compotaro.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville. A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Elks service starting at 9 a.m. Burial will be private at Greenwood Memorial Park at the convenience of the family.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, in the Christy Funeral Home, 11 W. Broad St., Millville. A viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home, with the Elk’s service starting at 9 a.m. Burial will be private in Greenwood Memorial Park at the convenience of the family.
